Swimming plays a large part in life at PPS. Each class from Year 1 upwards swims once a week as part of their curriculum. We use Europa Pools in Birkenhead for these lessons and they are led by two qualified swimming teachers. We are proud to have achieved Dolphin awards for each of our classes, celebrating a high level of achievement in these lessons.
Our curriculum is further complemented and enriched by a range of out of school clubs which allow the children an element of personal choice in their development programme.
Successful school teams
As members of the Independent Schools Association the children also have the opportunity to compete with other ISA Schools both at regional and national level for swimming, athletics, football, rounders, kwik cricket and netball.
Each year we attend the ISA North football tournament and have been very successful, being crowned as North England ISA Champions in both 2005 and 2006. As such we have been invited to the National finals finishing in third place in the National ISA tournament on both occasions. A feat of which we are extremely proud.
We also have an extremely successful school swimming team that has had many successful galas. In 2010 our team had a particularly successful year winning the Birkenhead Schools’ Swimming Gala for the sixth year in a row and the Wirral Schools' Swimming Gala for the third year in four triumphing against all the other area winners. This year also saw the reintroduction of the Merseyside Gala and our team also managed to win this!
Prenton Prep School’s swimming team also qualified for the finals of the ESSA relay finals in 2008, 2009 and 2010. This encompasses all schools in England and we were extremely proud of our achievements, especially as in 2010 the squadron team managed a second place in their final!
On top of this our water polo team entered the ISA North competitions in both 2009 and 2010. They achieved superb levels of success finishing second in 2009 and going one better to win it in 2010 to become ISA North of England champions.
Our School Cross-Country team have also recently taken part in the ISA North competition and we were very proud of all of our competitors and especially three top ten finishes in races with more than a hundred entrants in each and one qualifier for the National finals!
Three of our pupils also participated in the schools’ biathlon championships this year and all qualified from the regional heats for the semi-finals for all schools in North and Midlands. We were very proud of their achievements and are looking forward to hearing how our national finalist manages to do!
Finally we were extremely proud to receive a special award from ISA. This was presented at our Speech night in July 2010 by the National Sports co-ordinator for ISA and was given to the school to recognise our outstanding achievements in swimming, particularly the fact that eight of our pupils qualified for the 2009 National ISA finals and achieved eighteen medals between them including seven golds. The team this year have followed in their footsteps as we again took eight swimmers to the finals and brought home a pleasing clutch of medals with more national champions!
We are extremely proud of all the children who represent our school and thank you all for your efforts!
